DISCUSSION IN THE LORDS, Received 26th, 10.5 p.m, London, October 26. In the House of Lords* during the preliminary discussion on the Education Bill, .Viscount Goschen and the Archbishop of Canterbury advocated bringing the Bill into harmony with the feeling of the whole nation.
The former deprecated placing too much power in the bands of the Civil authorities and urged it was better to rely more on school authorities, who .were in closer tuoch with the parents. The Archbishop of Canterbury stated he wished to see school children Chrittianly brought up, and deprecated wrecking by amendment. There .was a grave danger of the schools being under bureaucratic control by Clause 4, giving extended facilities for special religious instruction. The proposed conditions were so complicated that it was impossible to comply .with their teaching. Elementary religions instruction ought to be available, given by qualified teachers. Religious teaching ought to be available for children whose parents desired it. The Bill was taken into committee.
