THE ABANDONED PORT STEPHENS.
I NAUTICAL INQUIRY. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin,' October 17. A nautical inquiry was held to-day into the circumstances connected with the abandonment of the steamer Port Stephens, before Mr Graham, S.M., and Captain Gordon and Messrs Moffat and A. R. Morrison, assessors. The evidence did not disclose anything new, save that when the steamer was abandoned, the hatches were off.
Arthur Edwin Jolly. master, said he supposed it was his duty to see to provisions. There was enough .n t board for a fortnight, or double the time of the voyage to Newcastle. Ho tvas inclined to think if there had been more provisions on board he would have abandoned the steamer; 11c acted to the best of his skill and judgment when he saw no possibility of repair or assistance, and knew ho was drifting southwards, and had only a fortnight's provisions on board.
