NORTH EGMONT MOUNTAIN HOUSE.

AN APPRECIATION.

The chairman of the North Egmont Mountain House Committee has received the following appreciative letter from a visitor to the House:—"l have recently paid a visit to the Mountain-House and as an exmember of the North Egmont Reserve Board and the lion, secretary 11 that Board for some years, I may pcihaps be pardoned if I make some remarks and offer some suggestions, first of all let me compliment the present committee upon the very excellent, wull-gi tided road leading from the radius line tight to the. Mountain House. When ono -asts one's mind back to ihe knee-deep mud one had to wade through only a very few years ago, and compare it with the present road, by which a cyclist can get upon his machine at ih.i house and ride practically the, whole way into lown, one can appreciate the, change.. -And what a change hac come over the accommodation. Instead of "humping blankets and tucker" up to the House, thine is, for those who picfer to pay for it, a well cooked meal to sit down to, with clean scrviel'-s thrown in, and at night to rest the weary climber a well made bed, with clean sheets thrown in. Price a shilling per meal and a shilling- per bed. Yes, reasonable, 1 think, very. The addition of verandahs to house and cottage have further increased the comfort of visitors, while the smok-'ing-rocms, now being erected, will meet with the approbation of those who indulge—and .of those who do not. I could go on complimenting you upon ihe change which is gradually "coming over the scene'', but 1 must not piolong this letter. 1 cannot close, however, without a word of praise in favour of vour caretaker, Mr Morris, and of' his vood wife. Your commit ice and the Hoard before iliem have front the; (beginning been fortunate in their ehoiee'of caretakers, but no caretaker has ever had the comfort of visitors more at heart than Ihe present holders of the position. And if the committee is wh'j every efi'ort will be made to retain ui'e Services of Mr and Mrs Morris. Their retention means increase in popularity of the house, Their reicntion, however, will nt b;' possible under pieseui conditions. No man wlili can do better wjtl. Willi

wife and rhilcl, con'-eni In live and sleep and cat in one mom i:ft by e.fl. 1 strongly advise ihe ■'iniinccialc n't tii:n of a two-roomed cottage, each room 12 x u, far the ac(oiniiirdal'i.n of the oiwlakci and I is family, somewhere elose in i]ic main house, bin sulliciotuh- far a.vay from the noise of coming and going, which in Ihe height of the season prevents sleep being obtained in the main house. Another suggestion 1 vould like to throw out is that one t f ihe back rooms of the main house be set apart as a kits-hen, its floor c.incTi It'll, and a r Jive or stove l-lared therein. As ihis' room is i-'fl x ijfi only, the cost of th e work s'lould not be great, but it would add considerably In ihe eomfnn of the paice. At pi'eserfi. with one fireplace, at which to rnnk. warm, and dry clothes, sonn'bod,- i* alwavs in - -mebody's wav, and IricHoa and dis roinfnrt ihe result."

-As alrearlv reporie,! i n these columns, a r-enking ranee has been procured, and will be put into use right auav.
