DEATH IN POLICE CELL.

Per Press Association. Wellington, October 13. A single man named Patrick Dcianey died in a cell at the Pelone police station. Deceased was arrested by Constable Tonkin about 7.30 last evening on a charge of drunkenness. Constable Cox visited him regularly until 3.15 this morning, when he appeared rational, and was able to converse freely. He was next visited at live o'clock, and was found to be dead. Deceased was a prohibited man, and a labourer by occupation.

THE INQUEST. Wellington, October 14. An inquest was held at Pelone yesterday afternoon on the body of Patrick Oelaney, found dead in the police cells that morning. Deceased was a labourer, living at the Lower llutt, and was a single man. The evidence showed there was a prohibition order against decua-ud, who was arrested on Friday evening for drunkenness. During the night he asked for whisky, but in accordance with the regulations this was refused. About an hour and a half later he was found dead. An autopsy showed that death was due to syncope, the heart being diseased, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
