THE SEPTIC TANK.

Our remarks concerning the working of the septic tank aroused a good deal of comment on Friday, and the Mayor ordered an inspection of the lank and its surroundings So the tank was opened up, the Mayor and the borough sanitary engineer, with a resident affected, going over the section from intake and detritus to chamber to effluent pipe. Then, things being found all right, the repot tent were summoned about a quarter of an hour later. Tlnre was no fault was found, but the nuisance of the previous day having disappeared. Other than the latter fact being established, the inspection elicited absolutely nothing. Friday was not an "off day" with the tank. It. is admitted the tank has "off days." On one of these recently the .Mayor look a Nelson borough councillor to inspect the tank, and the "dour was unpleasantly strong. On another occasion, quite iccently, the Mayor conducted a visiting municipal representative over the place, but ihen "everything in the garden was lovely." The inspection, of the chambers on Friday proved nothing in regard to the complaint made in | our columns that morning concern ing the effluent into the river.

Warehousemen and others in the vicinity state that they have now no complaint to make regarding gas from the vent pipe. Some time ago fault was ,found, bu\ tint tej-i/sance, lias since been entirely abated, and th'i trouble may easily have been caused by the gasworks sewer.

It is noticeable that the alterations made by Mr Kendall in the entrance lo the detritus chamber have effected considerable improvement, and the sewage now meets no resistance on its way to tho weir. The thick crust of blocked refuse has disappeared, and in ifs place there appears a thick scum on top, which acts as an effective impervious covering. The lank may now be said to be working bet ter than ever, and the effluent is certainly clearer than it was awhile ago. But the. action of the river water on this turns it into a dirty-looking fluid. ■ '
