URUTI.
I'RO.M OL"U OWN CORRESPONDENT. Glorious weadier is slili with us, but a few' sharp fiost* in ihe lnormng are keeping I iie gras- from growing. Al' lie- same, ilnie .seems to be plenty of and the stock are looking well ciciywheii'. Roads aie good, il dii-ty, everywhere ; quite a change from ihe winter's mud. Road work is going on apace in ihe backbloeks. 'i here are now upwards of >5 men ill the Moki, and 2o more are wanted. We have hopes of see- ; ing this road opened through to Whangamomona within die next twelve months and then wo will have to make a big bid for the extension of tii'- i.'ft track over the Moki saddle. This is ih<; worst part of the road, and will co s ' a good deaJ oi money to do, but once it is completed oyer ihe saddle, it will cost very little io form it the rest of the way. Whangamumna settlers will be abie lo bring their eaiUe through this way to Uio "'ale, and we may in the not very distant future have a saleyard crce.ed at Uruti. The situ was purchased by the VVaitara auctioneers, some years ago, but so far no yards have been erected. Our County Council are profiting* by the experience of the past autumn and are now busy with teams stndNoning ihe Uruti road. Tiie metal eontractor is now getting cut metal from tiie pit, but is making very s'ow progress.
Is our County Council going- to let this contract drag on into the winter and not get it finished i f should not wonder. No doubt they think it a pity to cover up such beautiful mud holes, or perhaps they think that we poor country correspondents would not have anything to write about in the winter if we did not have a county blunder or two to criticise. However, ii is to be hoped that they wii! shake the contiactor up a bit, and get things moving, for enough time lias been was<ed alieady. I hear that Mr A. Crawford, lata of Uruti, was the Successful tenderer for the Urunui-Awakino mail ct.ntraet. Perhaps the most successful social held licio by the ilall Company for die last twelve months came off on Wednesday night. The basket social was in every way a success. Fine weather prevailed, and quite a crowd turned up, about ten coming from Tongapoi uui. There were u baskets, and ail brought good prices. The highest price paid was■ Z2.() fur Miss Jones' basket. .Several minus were close up, and the Ilall Company arc in funds lo the lull'' ol aliout /X Dining ilik evening songs were lendered by Miss Jennie Jol| and Miss Stocklcy. Tlie music was supplied by i Miss May McKcnzic in her usual first class style. Sle* was assisted by Miss Jeipiir J nil. Mr liarnett made an efficient M.C., and Mr Area w elded the auctioneer's hammer and disposed of llie baskets. Dancing was kepi up until about half-past two in the morning'. 1 wish to personally thank al ! those ladies who brought baskets or in any way assisted to make the social a success.
