"MARRY IN HASTE."
Marry in haste and repent at leisure is a rule that is repeated to monotony's limit in the Divorce Court, but it is rarely that such an instance of rapidity of marriage as was given before Mr Justice Simpson at Sydney a few days ago. A petitioner for divorce stated that before her marriage she had know n her husband for about nine months. One evening he casually invited her to go for a walk to See some of her friends. She agreed, and the gentleman took her to a house in Surrey-hills, where he informed her that she was in the house of a minister. Thai being so, he continued, "we might as well get married." The lady was surprised; she was not prepared, she had not the consent of her father or mother; it was impossible! Then the lady raised the objection that s".ic wanted to remain in her situation. Al this stage the c.ergvman was rt'qucJwl 1.0 leave the room by the ardent swain, while he further argued his suit, liis supplications eventually overcame the objections raised by the lady, and the clergyman was recalled to complete the bargain. In teliingthis story to Mr Justice Simpson, the lady stated that she had made it quite dear that she was under age, and that no consent to the marriage had been given by her patent-, who were alive. His Honor expressed surprise and stated that if her story were true, and he had no reason to doubt it, a prosecution shou'd commence. He sent for an officer from the Department of the Registrar-General, informed him what had been given in the evidence, and advised that enquiries should be made.
