FOOTBALL.
AUCKLAND V. SOUTHLAND,
PEIt PBfflS ASSOCIATION, Auckland, August 25. The intcrprovincia) football match Auckland v. Southland for the Ranfurly Shield was played at Alexandra Park this afternoon,, in the presence of about six thousand spectators, an' was won by Auckland by 48 points to nil. With Gillett, our crack wing forward, and Seeling and llayward, of the forward division, standing down owing to injuries, it was expected that the local men would be kept hard at it to defend the shield, but they won very easily. The Southland forwards played a hard solid game, but lacked the dash and cleverness of the Auckland front division, while their backs, though at times given chances, seldom looked like scoring. The Auckland team played a more open game than in the previous representative matches, and the backs flung the ball about to good purpose in attacking movements, thir work generally showing marked improvement. Southland won the toss and elected to play against a strong wind in the first spell, during' which they failed to score and had 30 points hoisted against them. In the second half thoy rallied-a bit and became aggressive, but were worn down and the locals added 18 more points, while the visitors scored 12.
WAIKATO V. AUCKLAND. Hamilton, August 25. Wa'kato defeated Auckland by 9 points to 8.
