SCHOOL CADET MATTERS.
THE EXHIBITION CAMP V
Colonel Loveday met the officers of the Taranaki Cadet Battalion at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday. Major Dempsey was in the chair. The Colonel explained that he had called the meeting for two purposes : first to arrange re the proposed camp at Christchurch, and secondly, to settle the question of the battalion uniforms.
In regard to the first, the Colonel explained that there ujas a possibility of the Government bearing the whole cost of the camp and transportation of cadets.
Mr Wylie raised the objection that it would be difficult to arrange for the conduct of the schools while many male teachers were absent as cadet officers. This and the difficulty of boys being able to get away from Xaranaki country schools owing to the milking was admitted to be a drawback, but it is quite evident that nevertheless a good muster of the Taranaki No. i Battalion will go to Christchurch. The Colonel said in reply to a question that February would be the most likely month for the Battalion to visit Christchurch.
A long discussion took place on the matter of dadet uniforms. Some were in favour of abolishing tlie present uniform as it has been too much used as the private property ol the cadets. The remedy was to provide new facings and make the uniforms school property. Ultimately a motion by Mr Hard, ing, that the uniform remain ,as at present, was dofeated by an amendment by Mr Bary, that the uniform for the future be blue jersey with yellow facings, and that the uniforms be provided out of the school cadet corps' funds. A vote of thanks to the Colonel concluded the meeting.
