WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Football.-The first football match for Mr I. J. White's oup was played here on Saturday hetween teams reprc. senting Whangamomona and Kohuro,' tahi, and resulted in a win for. the latter by 11 points to 3. Three games are to be played for the above oup; the team winning the two games will retain possession of the oup until next year when it will again be competed for. Kohuratahi team is the favorite and unless the unexpected happens should win it easily. However, should Whangamcmona get a win next contest it will give a muchneeded stimulus to the latter team and result in a great struggle for the final game, V
An invitatiDn has been scnt'to Stratlimore to play a friendly match here next Friday week. This will probably wind up the season.
Cricket,—There is evidence already of the cricketing fraternity waking up after their wintry slumber and shaking off the lethargy under which they have been laboring. Visions of feats emulating the Trumper's, Noble's and Gregory's are permeating tho minds of rising young cricketers. There is talk of an opening matokto take place on the Bth of next month. I wish the players a prosperous season, Recreation Ground.—At last a move is to he made in the direction of a long.felt pubho want. Efforts arc to be made to secure a suitable Rccrea. Tim Ground, for this centre of a largo district. It is a matter that should " have been taken up long ago, and ii a matter of vital concern to all settlers and residents, It is to he hoped i will all interest themselves m the*"-* movement which is to be takon shortly. Bachelors' Ball.—This annual and popular event is to oomo off next Friday week, 31st inst., at the looal tail. - 1 Aotive preparation has been gomg-on for some time and a great success is anticipated. Mr H. Blair is acting secretary. Needless to say the organising is in good hands. "*■
Roads.—l notice you Uruti corres. pondent, keeps the matter of the UrutiMoki ro*d prominently before tie puhlio. It is a road that should be pushed on to completion with all speed. When finished it will provide direct communication to the coast. A very necessary object, where the cost of living is at almost famine prices. The farmer here gets less for his pro. duce, and has to pay more for what he consumes, than placos more favorably situated. The opening up of roads of communication like the above will be a great benefit to the district.
