WELLINGTON v. SOUTHLAND. PES MESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, August 22. The match, Southland v. Welling, ton, was played at the Athletic Park tail afternoon in the presence of between 3,500 and 4,000 spectators, including lord and Lidy Phuket, The ground was m capital order, and the weather perfect, The loeal com. bination, which won easily by 22 points to 3, proved its superiority in the second half, the visitors, with few exceptions, being kept busily repelling tho onslaughts of the opposing forces. Tho Wellington forwards swarmed over their oppononts in the loose and broke away ropeatedly from the line, engineering rushes which took tho ball down tho field at a great bat, The Wellington back division was unable to bring its scoring powers into any. thing\ like full play, owing to tho faulty play of Koberts (inside fiveeighth), whose tactics lost-at least half-a-dozen excellent chances of adding* (•&- his side's score. The Southland forwards played up solidly in the first spall, and secured possession oftener, but their backs failed to profit by |the advantage, being content to find tho touch line. After crossing over, the Southland forwards were ruu off their feot by the pace set them by the local division. Scores ia the first spell were Wellington 5 points, a try scored by Thomson and converted by G. Spencer, Southland 3, a try registered by Clark. In the next half Bamsden (2), Mitchinson, Hardham, and Thomson touched down, G. Speneet. adding the major points from Rams« don's first try. The place kicking wag poor.
