N.Z. FARMERS' UNION.

MANGOREI BEANCH. A capital meeting of tho above branch was held in the Upper School room, Mr W. N. Stephenson in the chair, with a fair attendance, including a good proportion of ladies. After the routine business had been disposed of, Mr Jas. J. Elwm, who was present by invitation, gave a stirring address on Union matters; combatting the opinion then expressed that the Union was promoted by lar?e farmers who wanted the support of smaller men to promote their own advantage ; showing that no benefit could accrue to one sort of farmer without all benefiting; also combatting the idea that the Union was an organisation for party purposes. Mr Elwin read a letter from the Colonial President which showed that many of the chief workers in the Union were supporters of a Liberal Government and also small farmers. He spoke of his own experience m North Taranaki, where at least half the farmers and members had Liberal tendencies. Mr Elwm went at length into Union matters, proying the necessity for amalgamation, especially when the new Ministers had shown adversity to the freehold, and were of strong labor representations; and showed how the branches could do good work, and save money by pooling the members' orders for manures and other things. He explained the advantages of the Mutual Insurance scheme, and enlarged on results already achieved, and showed the work now being undertaken for the benefit of the whole farming community,

At the close of the address, Mi Elwin received a very hearty vote ol thanks.

Several musical items were given by members present, and an enjoyable hour was spent. It is anticipated new members will be enrolled in consequence of Mr Ktwin's visit.
