CORRESPONDENCE.

THE VALUE OF SWIMMING. [TO Till! UIIITOK.] Sin,—lt is satisfactory to notice that our children at the pu'jlic schools are being taught to swim, with the yory gratifying results as reported in your paper of this morning. As one wko lias always taken the keenest interest in swimming, and particularly in teaching our children at school, I should say the general public fail to realise the yaluc of swimming, both as an accomplishment aud as a means of attaining and of keeping ourselves in good health, and fortifying the system against attacks of cold or disease. Swimming has been a life-long study with me, and during my experience I have carefully noted tko bereficial effects of frequent bathing and swimming upon the physical system. It keeps the system healthy and strong. A keener mental system is the result, and as our.individual success in life depends largely upon these qualities, I need not enlarge again upon the advantages of bathing and swimming. If you want an example in point I would quote the Japanese, who do more bathing than any other nationality, and, I think, the world is willing to admit thoy are of very keen intellect and havo plenty of stamina to fall back upon. This is mainly attributable to their frugal habits and bathing. The Stratford School Committee are to be congratulated upon their action in regard to providing baths. They have decided to go in for them there. Local bodies should go in for coyereck'n tepid water swimming baths, Thoy would find swimming would make better progress, on account of the swimruin ! classes going on regardless of tho bad w.'athor. I trust my letter may serve us a little encouragement to Mrs Diwling (of the West End school) and | her pupils. I think tke fullest congratulations are due to this lady for her good work,—l am, etc., -. „, G. T. Lanoley. New Plymouth, July 25.
