LIQUOR IN THE KING COUNTRY.
Mlt PEESS ASSOCIATION. Hamilton, July 25. In connection with several cases against natiyes charged with drunkenness at Otorohanga, Constable Fraser informed Mr Northcroft, S.M. at Te Awamutu yesterday, that thore was a lot of drinking in the King Country amongst tho nativos. Very frequently 20 or 30 Maoris would journey to To Awamutu by train and return the samo day, bringing back two or three bottlos of whisky. Sergeant McPheo stated the natives come down to To Awamutu from the King Country in droves, and each returned with a little parcel. The publicans wero very careful to see that each package was duly labelled. The Magistrate stated that in order to got over this difficulty, ho would represent tho matter to tho proper quarter and endeavor to have the whole of the Li. censing districts of Waikato, Franklin and Egmont gazetted under section 46 of the Licensing Act, which prohibits tho sale of liquor to Maoris for consumption off the premises.
