THE GRADING OF TEACHERS.
AN IMPORTANT PROPOSAL, m PBEBS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, June 27. The system of grading school teaohersby the inspectors was discussed at a meeting of the Board of Education. In pursuance of notice of motion, Mr Peacock moved that the inspectorial grading of all teachers, when comI pleted, should be open to the inspection of any teacher at the office of the Board, and that until completed, such grading should not necessarily govern selection by the Board of teachers for promotion. He said it was absolutely necessary that the toachers should be satisfied with the way in which pro- | motions were made, otherwise the Board might lose some of its best teachers.
The Chairman said lie was uueertain as to what the effeot would be, if the teachers were allowed to inspect the gradings. A system t>f log-rolling would bo opened up. If the grading were confined to reports, a teacher could never bo graded beyond his present position. The reoords of a teacher would not show his qualifications for a higher position. A man might bo a splendid first assistant, and yel not suitable for a head mastership.
Inspector Petrie said he considered the adoption of the proposal would be of assistance in grading. His own feeling was, in fact, that it would be very inadvisable to allow teaohers to know each others grading, j The Board ultimately resolved to defer consideration until ni.vt meeting, and in tho meantime to request its staff of inspectors to rcpjrt, giving their opinions as to (he advisablencss of the principle involved.
