TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

The monthly moating of the Taranaki Land Board was held at New Plymouth on Tuesday. Present: The Commissioner (Mr F. Simpson), and Messrs J. Battenburg, J. B. Connett, and J. Heslop,

LABD APPLICATIONS. The following land applications wero approved Optional right to purchase: J. D. Oliphant, Section 1, Block 14, Mahoo, 500 acres ; It. U. Harden, Section 9, Block 14, Mihoe, 675 a.'rcs; W. A. Flavoll, Section 5, Bio 'c 11, Opaku, 1806 acres; N. B. Fletcher, Section 11, Block 13, Mimi, 396 acres; W. C. Fletcher, Section 6, Block 12, Upper Waitara, 720 acres; John Kea, | Section 2. Blojk o, Mahoe, 374 acres; |J. W. Richards, Section 4, Block 8. Ngatimaru, 25 ) acres j A. Harre, Section 3, Block 1, Pouatu, 892 acres, The applicants who drew sections in the Ohura and Heao blocks were also approved. Including these the total land allotted amounted to 17,321 acres. J. J, Lowrie, the successful applicant for Section 1, Block 15, Ohura, wrote stating that he is apparently ineligible to hold the lan 1, as he owns 225 aores freehold and his a lease of 2260 acres. He was gu ■led. by the word "owned" in the instructions to applicants on sub-plan.—lt was decided to re-ballot the land amongst the six other applicants, and to return the deposit to Mr Lowrie, It was also agreed to draw the Department's attention to the misleading nature of the instructions to applicants on the sale plans, as they are at varianoe with the declaration to be made by applicants. The application of W. A. Flavell was approved, subject to payment of valuation for improvements, and £1 valuation on it and Section 4, Block 8, Ngatimaru, are to be dealt with as provided by the Land Act.

Sea's application was granted, with a proviso that a tunnel be taken for a deviation of the Arnold road.

The application of R. H. Phillips was held over for further information, and it was decided to inquire whether the transferees arc aware that the condition of personal residence has to be complied with by next September. Consideration of tho transfers to F. E. Dobson was deferred till next meeting, when the applicant will be asked to appear, Tho application of C. F. Carter was deferred for further enquiry, and that of G. R. Mossman for remission of rent was refused. Mr Bear waited on the Board in support of his application, and Mr Bell submitted himself to examination by the Board. After considerable discussion, the Board, having intimated to Mr Bear that in its opinion the consideration stated in the application (£685) was a greater liability than the incoming tenant could undertake, he agreed to reduce it to £6OO, and the Board then approved of the transfer. Mr A. A. Nelson, having been examined, his application was approved. The remaining applications wore approved. H. B. Petherick explained that he was financially unable to continue the improvements on Section 20, Block 15, Aria, and applied to transfer to T. R. Etherington,—Granted, subject to the improvements being comploted within six months.

For tho same reason A, A, Wildermoth appliod to transfer Sections 7 and 59, Block 13, Pouatu, to J. L. Anderson.—Refusod, the applicant to be informed that tho sections must be declared forfeited, as no improvements have beon effected.

Malioc, and XV., Pouctu, survoyed by | Mr G. H. Bullard, District Surveyor, were laid on the table, The areas vary from 415 to 1390 acres.—The cloven sections in the Mahoo S.D. are to be offered for sale or selection under part 3 of the " Land Act, 1892," classed as heavy bush land. Section 18, Block 15, Pouatu, is not to be dealt with 11 present, A school site will bo provided ou Section 3, Block 3 Mahoe, as suggested by the surveyor.

BEBUMED POSSESSION, The Bangor reported having reI suined possession of tho following forfeited sections: Section 3, Block 1 Taurakawa; Sections 6 and 7, Bind 1, Tanrakawa; Section 8, Block XT. Upper Waitara; Section 4, Block XV.. Upper Waitara.—The lands are to be re-offerod under the provisions of pari 3of tho Land Act, classed as heavy bush land.

CONDITIONS. T. W. and M. McMullin, Section 8 Block 6, Upper Waitara, and M. George Benson, improved farm settlor, Seotion 11, Block 10, Oliura, was given six months' extension of time in which to reside. D. McKenzie, the holder of Section 2 Block 13, Oliura, was non-residont, ano failed to reply to the Board's notice. The section is to be forfeited and reballoted for,

Thu temporary occupation of small grazing run 5, Opuku, by A, C. Fergusaon was considered.—A temporary grazing license is to be granted from month to month, at a rental or £lO per annum. J. Nicol applied for a lease of Section 26, Blook 14, Ohura.—The Board will recommend that the land be brought under the Improved Farm regulations, and that in the oireumstances the application be not entertained. A. M. Gill applied for Seotion 0, Block 2, Heao, as an addition to her holding Seotion 11. —The land will be re-offered for public competition. Applications were made by G. T. Simmons and H. <l. Wisken for parts !of Section 9, Block 16, Aria, as ad. ditions to their holdings.—The applications were not entertained, and the land is to be re-offered for selection. Alfred Williams asked that Section 2, Block XI., Totoro, be forfeited and re-offered at a reduoed price, weighted with the valuation for improvements. —Agreed to. D. W. Smith applied for Section 7, Block 13, Upper Waitara, to be forfeited as there is no access to it and no homestead site.—Agreed to. P. W. Myers applied for a temporary lease of Section 37 Hurakama suburban.—A yearly tenanoy is to be granted. B. Johnson applied for a temyorary lease of Section 44, Mangaehu Suburban Cemetery Reserve.—A yearly tenancy is to be granted. The question of the quantity of bush to be felled was left in the hands of the Commis sioner.

The Sanger reported oil the application of J. Smith for a homestead site on Section 19, Block 15, Ngatimaru.— The land will be re-offered to Mr Smith, under Section 114 of the Act, as recommended by the Ranger. The following local bodies submitted proposals for expenditure oi accrued thirds Clifton County Council £4lO 9s, Manganui Road Board £49 7s 3d.—Approved.

Forfeitures were declared in the following cases of arrears of rent on holding in Spotswood Settlement: —J Griffin, Section 36, Blook 4, Paritutu ; R. T. Clark, Section 60, Block 4, D. L. A. Astbury was granted further extension of time to February next, to build on Section 10, Block XI., Omona, to avoid danger from firing lii< clearing. No further extension will be given.

( Geo. Ingham applied to exchange Section 7, Blook 2, Heao, for Section 11, Block 14, Ohura.—The matter was left in the hands of the Commissioner, with power to act. A plan of land required for railway purposes on Section 9, Blook 5, Ohurn, was laid on the table.—Left to the Commissioner, with powor to act, D. Deatin applied for a lease of tinRailway Reserve at tho back of his Section 8, Block 13, Ohura.—A yearly lease was grantod, at one shilling per acre per annum, A. Thomas applied for a lease of Section 3, Block 9, Totoro.—A yearly lease will be offered to the applicant | first year freo of rent, conditionally upon the gorse being cleared. The Distriot Road Engineer bur gested that one year's rent on Section 14, Block 9, Mimi, bo remitted to M McMahon for delay to fencing, cause' by a deviation of the TongaporutuMangaroa road.—Tho Board rejroti it cannot sec lti way to adopt tlif suggestion.

Messrs. Malone, McVeagh & Anderson wrote suggosting that declaration* as to improvements effected to date should bo attached to all applications for transfor, so as to avoid delay in deferring an application for a report from a iCrown Lands Banger.—The Board cannot see its way to accede to the request, as each case must be dealt with on its merits. Messrs Bothwick and Sons wrote offering a rent of 16s per acre per annum for a yearly tonancy of Section .23, Waitara West, suburban. The offer was dcolined, and the land will be re-ottered for lease by public auotion.

P. MoYerry wrote that he would take up the northern part of Section 6, Block i, Opiku, if difided ns at presont surveyed, but not sliowu on the plan. 'Referred to ranger for report. T. B. Waters applied for a leaso of part Section 6, Block 4, iVLiini, being about nine acres of cleared land. —A yearly tenancy of the grass will be offered at 30* per annum. The Ranger reported on fulfilment ot residence condition by J. Harrie on Section 9, Block XI, Pouatu,—Received.

J. T. Barker applied for exemption from personal residence on Section 6. Block 13, Omona, while he continueto reside on the other land on Mareroa road.—Keferred to ranger for report.
