In the House, Mr Deakin in reply to questions, stated that under the reciprocity treaty with Now Ze.iland, all the States of the Commonwealth would receive equal treatment. The treaty was closed in a sense tb it would require authority from the New Zealand Government to re-open it, Asked if he would place a sum on the for tlie families of the late John Fairell and Victor Daly, Mr Deakin said the question of recognising, as in Britain, the claim of eminent literary men and the families of literary men, wasworthy of consideration. Geniuses were feiTj and as dump tbeir lives they were rarely rewarded by any pecuniary remuneration, he thought they had a claim for consideration'by the Government. The debate on the.
