AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY.
PBB PBESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, May 31. The ceremony of confenng degrees in connection with the Auckland University College took plaoe at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the Choral Hall. In the absence of the Chancellor, Sir Robert Stout, the degrees were conferred by the Vice-chancellor, the Hon. C. C. Bowen, M.LC, who gave an address on classical and scientific cduoation. The present complaint as classical education was, he said, probably due to ;a great oxtent to the old system of teaching the classics, but the method had now been much improved. If the classics were allowed to fall into abeyance, the loss would bo serious for generations to come. The university of New Zealand was desirous of providing as far as possible for instructions in every branch of human knowlodgo, and to give opportunities to those with special leanings, without it being necessary for thorn to go further afield. Mr Joynt, the Registrar, in his address, made special reference to the success of Ernest Chittcy, the blind student, whose achievement was a remarkable one. Two degrees were being conferred for the first time in the history of the university, namely those of Master of Science and Master of Laws. These degrees were at present in an incomplete stage, owing to delay in the issue of the Charter, but the delay would not be of long duration.
