STRATFORD NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Messrs Hartnell Bros' (New Plymouth) tender has been accepted for the erection of the boarding-house at Douglas road. Mrs R. E. Hudson has loft on a three months holiday to Australia. Mr Alfred Coleman has been appointed agent for the Government Fire Insurance Department. Mr M. Foley (Clerk of Court) has been appointed Ileturning Officer for the Patea electorate. A painful accident happened at the Ngaire school on Thursday last, wheu the second daughter of Mr Jack Robson was severely injured. No one saw the accident, but it is supposed she was struck with the school swing, cutting her cheek open, shattering tlie bone, and rendering her unconscious. Mr Evans, the headmaster, immediately took the child into his house, and Dr Harrison was immediately telegraphed for, and on his arrival the patient was chloroformed, and seven stitches put in tho face. It is feared the child will ho disfigured for life. The news of Mr S. Carleton's death was received here with regret. He was well-known to most of the townspeople, and esteemed as a gentleman and an honorable man. He leaves a widow and one daughter, who have the deopest sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. At last night's Council meeting His Worship tho Mayor was appointed a delegate to attend the meeting con. vened by the Mayor of New Plymouth re the ironsand leases and Exhibition matters. The circus had a crowded house here last uight. Mr Thos. Grubb is at present confined to his bed with a poisoned leg. Mr Cook (Public Works Engineer), has arrived and taken up his duties.
