FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
OFPIJIAL BECOGNITION BY THE ZING. Eeccivcd 28, 9.2 p.m. Lokdon, May 28. King Edward, with Quean Alexandria accompanying him, opened the central offices of tho Hearts of Oak Benefit Society at Saint Pancras. The newspapers, commenting, says tins is not the first occasion on which the work of Friendly Societies has been recognised so directly by the Sovereign. In response to an address by J. D Sum, Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies, King Edward warmly sympathised with the voluntary efforts for thrift. He rejoiced at the splendid success achieved. The progress of the Societies, he said, was one of the clearest indications of tho prosperity of the people. The Primate, Mr Herbert Gladstone, the Eight Hon. John Burns, and representatives of the chief Friendly Societies were present.
