CHINESE ON THE RAND.
INSPECTION BY LORD SELBOURNE.
Received 28, 9.2 p.m. Capetown, May 28. Lord Selbourne visited tho compounds at Glen Deep, Jumpers' Deep, and Simmer Mines, and inspected eight thousand coolies. He elicited from the boss of the boys that the white officials treated them fairly. They were comfortable and earned more then they possibly could in China. They fully understood the repatriation notice. Lord Selbourne expressed his anger at the marauders' outrages, and said he would severely punish the guilty. Some of the coolies at Jumpers' petitioned, saying they did not want rjpatnation. If they were repatriated tiey wanted the balance of three years' wages. Lord Selbourne replied that the Government did not want to compel repatriation, but they must assist to prevent outrages.
