As the result of inquiries made in London, Mr Coghlan has informed the Federal Mail Services Commissi! n that the estimated cost of a steamer of the type of the Mongolia or Macedonia, provided with facilities for perishable products, range from three hundred and thirty-five thousand pounds for a sixteen, knot vessel, to four hbndred alii sixty-six thousand for a twenty knot vessel, while the additional cost, if fitted with turbine machinery would range from two to five thousand, according to speed. The cost ot a firstclass intermediate steamer, used mainly for cargo and perishable goods, ranges from two hundred and eighty-two thousand for a fourteen knotter, to three hundred and eleven thousand for a sixteen knot boat. The information is apropos the proposal to establish a Commonwealth line of steamers.
