LITERARY SOCIETY.
There was a fair attendance at the meeting held last night to consider the proposed amalgamation of tho two New Plymouth Literary Societies. Mr H. Cocker presided. ■lt was decided to amalgamate tho ladies' and men's societies, and rules were amended and adopted. Officers were elected, subject to acceptance of those nominated: President, Mr W. H. Skinner; vice-presi-dents, Misses Drew and Hoddcr, Messrs W. A. D. Banks and H. Cocker; secretary, Air W. Brigelow; treasurer, Miss Lewis; registrar, Miss Mynott; reporter, Mr Long; chairman of programme committee, Mr P. White ; general and programme committee, Misses Hodder and Black, Messrs Long, Morshead, and Staples, with the president and secretary. The programme committco was authorised to have the syllabus printod. A debate will be held next Tuesday night. Subject: " Should Chinese be admitted to New Zealand?" Mr Dawson in the affirmative, and Mr Staples tho negative.
