The championship matches began at Wellington on Saturday, aud there was a fair attendance of spectators at the matches. A strong, cold, northerly wind prevailed, somewhat spoiling kicking and passing. Considering that it was the first meeting of the season, players were in fairly good form, particularly tho Old Boys and l'onekes, who provided an exciting gaino from start to finish. Old Boys beat Poncke, 17 to 3. Oriental beat Victoria College, 35 to nil. l'etone beat Athletic 8 to 7. Melrose beat Wellington, a to 3.
