LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Minister of Education has recognised classes in elementary handwork in 36 schools, and sewing in eight schools, in tho Taranaki Education district. No further information has been received from the Wanganui Education Board with regard to the proposal to appoint joint woodwork and instructors for the Wanganui and Taranaki districts. In consequence of a heavy fog at Heads, the Rotoiti, did not reach Onehunga till 6 o'clock last night. She is now timed to leave for New Plymouth at |8 o'clock this morning, and should arrive at the Breakwater about 8 this evening, leaving here at noon to-morrow for Wellington. The Education Department has granted- £l4O for additions to the Oaonui teachers' residence, and £6O | for Salisbury road Plans are to be prepared end tenders called, to be dealt with at next meeting of the Taranaki Education Board. A sea monster was washed ashore at Kaikoura some few days ago. Some hold the opinion that it is an octopus, while others maintain that it is a species of sea cow. It has a body 12ft long, with numerous feelers, from tip to tip, and some l(iin round. Tho smallest measured over 3ft long.
Yesterday the Mayor (Mr li, Cock) received the following telegram from the Premier:—"Amongst others the Premier communicated with Mr John I). Sprcckles, and has received tlie following from him from San Fran-cisco-.—"Losses enormous, but not | irreparable ; relief works effective; people hopeful; thanks of'ei'y to New Zealand, send to Financial Committee, U.S. Sub-Treasury, San Francisco.— John D. Sprcckles." The latter part is a satisfactory answer as to whom I financial assistance should bo sent, and should be taken as a guide by Mayors and others receiving contributions as to whom the money should be sent.— R. An electric light bulb in each compartment of the Central polling booth shed light on the voting operations. The installation was very handy and effective.
MrD, Edwards, who has boon with Messrs H. Ward and Co. for a number of years, leaves New Plymouth next week to take up a position with Mossrs Cross, Skirton and Co., of Wairarapu. Mr Edwards has, during his stay in New Plymouth, boen a prominent member of the Military Baud, and was also connected with the Star Football Club.
While a'.constable in Oan aru gaol was haviug a roujh time at tho hands of a prisoner, Patrick Kennedy, a lother convict named Thomas Baldwin came to the rescue. Baldwin is a sexagenarian, and an effort is being made to get the Department of Justioe to remit tho balance of his sentence. He was serv» ing six weeks for drunkenness and stealing swags.
In regard to the statemeut that has been published to the effect that the football clubs will have the use of tho Recreation Ground for the greater portion or the whole of the season, we have the authority of the committee for stating that they are now making financial arrangements with a view to commencing work on the ground, and it is extremely probable that the spado and saw will be busy there before tho end of May.
A majority of tho Taranaki Education Board has decided in favour of dispensing with tho frontal tower shown on the plans of tho New Plymouth Technical School, principally on the ground of economy, but also because tho Board considers that the appearance of the structure is not greatly improved by it. The building will now have a large portico, with battlementcd top.
" It isn't the only unsightly thing in Waitara," was a remark by Mr Faull that caused some hearty laughter at the Education Board meeting. The Waitara Borough Council had complained of the unsightly appearance of some burnt and bent sheets of iron erected as a kind of shelter in the school grounds. Mr Faull considered they were doing no harm, and would offend few, as they were away from the miin thoroughfares.
Late last night intelligence was re ceived that Mr W. Bcalo, sou of Mr Beale, bootmaker, New Plymouth, had been killed on the railway near Carterto.i. Details are meague, but it seems that the deceased, who was a railway fire nan, was leaning from his engine when his head came m contact with a bridge, and he was killed instantly. We exteud our sympathy to the bereaved relatives in their sudden affliction.
There was a record attendance of over forty householders at the annual meeting at Kent Road on Monday night, Mr J. Allen presiding. The election of a committee resulted:— D. Jordan 27, J. Allen 25, D. Alexander 24, J. A. Batten 23, W. Chatter-, ton 22, W. Allen 20, C. Warren 11) M. Williams 19, T. Molloy IV), S. A. E. Kcast 19, W, Paynter 18. The four candidates who tied, decided in favour of Mr Keast. Mr J. Allen was re-elected chairman, secretary and treasurer. The funds showed a credit, of £l6 Is 7d. The new committee comprises five of last year's members the two new committeemen, Messrs Jordan and Kcast, being at the head and foot of the poll, respectively.
