THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
The contest for the New Plymouth mayoralty resulted in the return of Mr Dockrill. To our mind the issue, under the peculiar circumstances of Ihc position, was somewhat of a foregone conclusion. The election, as fur as the candidates were concerned, was fought on fair and honorable lines. The verdict of the people is tantamount to an endorsement of the policy of retrenchment and staff-organisation recently initiated by the retiring Mayor—a policy which Mr Dockrill publicly announced would have his support. There is no reason tj doubt that the issue of tho election in a considerable measure hinged on this important point, and the tact that Mr Roy's views on the question were not known, unquestionably militated against him. While, therefore, on personal grounds there was nothing to choose between the candidates, either of whom would fill the position with credit, we believe that on the score of policy and expediency the burgesses will have no reason to regret their selection. On some future occasion we hope we may have the pleasure cf welcoming Mr fioy to the office of chief magistrate of tli; town, a position that, under other circumstances, is quite within his grasp.||
