FOOTBALL.
It is authoritatively stated that Abbott has taken up his residence in Auckland and will don the jersey for one of the-northcrn city clubs. At the Domain Carnival at Eltham on Monday, much interest was taken in the scven-a-side football tournament. Teams competed from Hawera, To Itoti, Okaiawa, Stratford (2), and Eltham (2). The contest resulted iu a win for Kiuvera, who won an exciting game from Stratford A by 3 points to nil. The first game of the season atHawera was played on Saturday, between a toani composed of Hawera players and Kia Toa, a team from Palmcrston North. The match resulted in a wiu for Hawera by !) points to 3.
The football tournament at the Caledonian Sports at Opunake on Monday, was won by Pihamn. The JElthum Second Juniors sent a team to Palinerston North on Saturday, and, after a hard fought game, inflicted defeat on a heavy combination representing Kia Toa by 3 points. At the Athenaeum Sports at Kaponga on! Monday, four teams representing Kaponga, Riverlea, Waimate, and Okaiawa competed. The games were oxeiting, the final resulting in Okaiawa defeating Kaponga by a try to 0. The Kaponga correspondent ot the Hawera " Star " writes: —" We, in Kaponga, are wondering how the Taranaki iiugby Union are going to treat us at their meeting this week. All the footballers in the district are doing their utmost to push forward their claim for recognition. At the sports on Easter Monday the two teams from here showed that there was good material to work upon if a change were only fiven to bring it out. So fur as I can see no reasonable arguments have been brought forward by Waimate and Okaiawa. It is all nonsense to say that Waimate or Okaiawa will be squashed. As some members of the Union have opposed our entrance on the score that we will forfeit, I understand that some enthusiasts havo offered to pay over a substantial deposit to be forfeited if Kaponga do not carry out their engagements. In tho eyent of our not being admitted tlicro is sonje talk of running the club and playing with non-afliliated teams."
THE ASSOCIATION GAME. At the annual meeting of the Urenii; Club, Mr H. L. Scholefield was elected secretary and captain. The subscription was fixed at 2s 6d per member, and the club decided to play in all white. A proposal to " bar " all Rugby players was defeated. Play will probably commence on the 26th inst. An effort is being made to form an Association Club at Eltliam, and a mcetiug for that purpose is to bo held on Wednesday.
