FATAL DEER-STALKING EXPEDITION. PEE PBE3S ASSOCIATION. Cabtebton, April 10. News has been roceived that F. Hawke, of Groytown, fatally shot a companion named Stubbs, while deer stalking. There aro no particulars. Wellington, April 10. News has beon received by the Police of a dcplorablo shooting affair which took place early this morning at Pirinoa, near Martinborough, in the Wairarapa. On Saturday morning Albert Stubbs, employed in the Railway Departmen f at Christchurch, and James Evans, employed in Ross and Glcndenning's warehouse at Christchurch, arrived from South and proceeded to Martinborough to meet a young man named F. H. Hawke, the three having nr. ranged a doer-stalking expedition. From the meagre details available, it appears that they were this morning pursuing a stag in company. The animal bounded into some scrub, and Stubbs also went into the trees. [ Hawke, who was some i distance away, just saw the top of his head. Thinking that Stubbs' head was part of tho stag, Hawke fired, killing his companion. Stubbs was a son of Mr Anthony Stubbs, Inspector of tho permanent way at Wanganui. He was a member of the Sixth Contingent in South Africa.
