NEW ZEALAND FREIGHT WAS COMMENCED. CHEAP PASSENGER RATES. SUBSIDISED LINE TAKES THE LEA D. I'KK I'IiKSS ASSOCIATION, Duxedin, April 10. The Fcderal-Houlder. Company are advertising new passenger rates tonight at s i loon 25 guineas, steerage 12 guineas, also great reductions in freight. RIVAL COMPANIES JOIN ISSUE. ALL-ROUND REDUCTION IN FREIGHTS AND FARES. Chbistchubch, April 10. When seen this afternoon concern, mg the action of the Federal Co. in reducing faros and freights between New Zealand and London, Mr Isaac Gibbs, general malinger of the New Zealand Shipping Company, said " The situation is quite clear. These people have, been pin-pricking us for some time. Now they are attacking us. It goes without saying that we shall take the necessary steps to protect our interests, and our clients may rest assured that they will receiTe as favorable treatment from us as from any otlier line. The action of the Federal-Houlder Line necessarily entails an all-round reduction of freights and fares. Whether these will be permanent or only temporary remains to be seen. Beyond this I have nothing to say."
NO FIXED FREIGHT TARIFF. WELLINGTON, April 10. Mr Owen Cox, manager in Australia of tke Federal Line, declines to make a statement about the skipping tariff war. From enquiries made in olkcr directions it seems unlikely that the company will advertise a iixcd tariff of freights, but will deal with • shippers individually. The result of this will probably be the creation of an open market for freights. Rates quoted by all the companies aro likely to be governed by the circumstances of the moment.
