TREATISE ON AUSTRALIA.
I INFLUENTIAL MEETING IN LONDON, WHAT THE COMMONWEALTH BEQUIREB. Received 30, 9.45 a.m. Lohdok, March 80. E. T Douat presided at a meeting of the Australasian Chamber of Com* merce, air the Agents-General and many of the leading merchants being present.
Sir John Seed read a paper on trade production and industries. He declared it was possible to largely in* crease the mineral and other products with increased facilities. It was ez« pedient to construct more railways, especially to connect the east and west. It was necessary to increase the population, and the Government had de* termined that for the country's good) British immigration, not only to increase production, but for defence aid the restriction of the colored races, was very necessary. If there had been uo restrictions in the past, Australia would have had a large: colored than a white population. If wise counsels prevailed in the States, the|Commonwealth would become responsible' for their debts. The establishment of one Australian Stock would be advantageous to Australia) and would command a hotter price and be more sought after. He believed Australian Consols to be as popular as British.
