CHINESE ON THE XAND,
Lokdok, Maroh 29.
The Rev. Landor Smith, Presbyter* ian minister of Gernuston, the largest centre of mining on the Rand, and a Liberal in polities, in a letter to the press, declares that the demand for labour in the mines is far beyond what the natives are able to supply. He ii convinced that white labour would end in moral and eoonomie failure. There' was no taint of slavery about the ep. ployment of the Ghiftese, and,the cry to that effect tu unjust, unworthy, and untrue. The Chinese were better fed, housed, and paid than the average unskilled labourer in British factories, and Chinese outrages were not more prevalent than occur in English eom> munities. Personally, he objected td Chinese becoming permanent settlers.
