The race is worth ISOOsovs. Machine Gun has been nominated at a cost of -losovs. Though run under w.f.a. conditions, the penalties and allowances are of so severe a nature as lo make it possible for a well performed horse to put up 201b penalty, while maidens can claim up to 281b allowance. Machine Guu will carry a 10lb penalty, making his impost 9.11. The following are the likely starters:—Machine Gun 9.8, Gladsome 9.7, Pendant 9.5, Condor, Charles Stuart 8.12, True Scot, Laehlan 7.3, Tom Moore 6.10, Duke of Melton, Pompous 0.7, Shautee Man, Ellis, Gapon, Sergeant Brue 5.6. Racing at Wanganui next Thursday and Friday. Stratford nominations close to-day. Kitchen Maid, a double winner at the Poverty Bay meeting, is a four-year-old filly by Soult, out of Cuisine. Jolly Friar was a strong order for the two fivefurloug events at Woodvi He, but ran unplaced m each engagement. Gargoyle, who effected a surprise in the Hack Hurdles at Woodville on Wednesday, is a half-brother to Sleepwell, by Jet d'Eau, out of Leonie. winner of the Maiden, is a full brother to Betsy, by Eureclydn— Santa Katerina. Mollis is one of A. Peters' team. Ivanoff started odds on favorite for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, but had to strike his colours to Lady Landon and Gallantry.
Stepdancer had an easy win for the Dunedm Cup, scoring by four lengths. Convoy was made favorite on the machine. After a long scries of disappointments, Melodeon rewarded his supporters with a dividend; the sou of Melodeon winning the Autumn Handicap at Woodville, and paying £1 lis for each £. Sherlock Holmes, a gckling by The Officer, out of Spinney, is retried to be a useful sort of hack. He scored a double at Woodville in good style, Mr C. O'Connor will act as starter at the Stratford meeting. Noctiiiform has been nominated for l he Ascot Gold Cup. Nominations for the Taranaki J.C. Autumn Meeting close on Monday at 9 p.m. The Takauiuia Cup winner, Master Delavcl, was brought down from Auckland by the Rarawa on Friday, and entrained to Wanganui to fulfil engagements at the autumn meeting. Mr Joe Chadwick. the well known sporting scribe and handicappcr. has compiled a book entitled "Men of Mark in the World of S|iorl in New Zealand."
Owners are reminded that noiiiinations for the Stratford Annual Meeting close 10-uight. The Stratford Cup, loOsovs, and St. Patrick's Handicap, HOsovs, are the principal events. The Stratford Club offer a special inducement to owners outside the province by paying the steamer freight and railage on all horses taking part at the meeting.
