A DOOMED VESSEL
. « BURNING IN NEWCASTLE HARBOR. TERRIFIC EXPLOSIONS. BURNED TO THE WATER'S EDGE. Received 12, 3.15 p.m. Svdkbv, January 12. The barque Itala, loading coal at Newcastle, caught fire this morning, The flames quickly enveloped Lor. In order to save the wharves the vessel was towed into the stream. Several terrific explosions took place. The boat drifted on to a sand bank at Walsh Island, and was burnt to the water's edge. Received 12,10.24 p.m. • Sydney, January 12. The barque Itala wbjch caught fire at Newcastle had a largo quantity of saltpetre and 300 tons of coal aboard. The fire is still burniug fiercely. The vessel is lying on a sandbank at AValsh Island, where she drifted after being towed from the wharves. The interior of the vessel is a mass of lire and her sides are a glowing white heat. Frequent explosions arc heard for miles, and no one is able to approach. It is supposed the trimmers left a light burning when (hey ceased work, and that it ignited a tarpaulin and spread to the saltpetre.
