THROTTLING A NEEDED INDUSTRY.

TRACTION ENGINE LICENSES. r-ER paras association. Blkntikim, January 3. The report of Mr Shortt, Government Commissioner to inquire into heavy haulago conditions m Marlborough lias been published. The enquiry was held in November at the instance of the Marlborough Traction Engine and Machine Owner's Union, which complained that separate license fees by Local Bodies practically prohibited its industry. Six Koad Boards and the Blenheim Borough Council were cited to the enquiry. The Commissioner now finds that the total fees leviable or to be levied in Marlborough on one engine alone amounted to £llO per annum, or £l7O for an engine and waggons, which is far in excess of similar fees imposed in any other county in the Colony. He makes a number of suggestions for the alleviation of these conditions, among them being that Local Bodies be invited to adopt a system of low priced permits; that the Counties Act be brought into force, and that present legislation be amended to provide for combined action on the part of local authorities.
