Mr A. H. Guy lias been elected to the vacancy on the TCaponga Town Board, vice Mr Law who resigned. Mr Guy is a brother to Mr Arthur Guy, the well-known Taranaki wingforwarrt. A presentation of a parcel of valuable books to the llr.\ Robert Haddon, Maori Missionary, wis made at a mcetng of the Norman''.? C.K. Society recently. Dr. Peter li'ic.k, the recently appointed Government Health officer anions the Maoris on the West Coast, was present. Sir J. G. Ward leaves in the middle of February, via P. and 0., for the Postal Conference, opening in Home on April 21st. He will be accompanied bv Lady Ward and his daughter, Mr W. Gray, Secretary of the Postal Department, and Mr 13. Wilson, his Private Secretary. He returns via America about the middle of July.
Mr W. H. Bartle, a well-known and much respected resident of Taranaki, died suddenly on Friday last at Opunake, the cause of death being Bright's disease. When he first came to the | colony some 15 years ago he settled at Oaktira, where he. remained for nine years, after which he went to Kahui road, being for three years engaged in sawmilling there, eventually settling down in Opunake. Ite leaves a widow, three daughters, and two sons. On Sunday afternoon, at the Presbyterian Church, Opunake, Miss Pettigrew was presented with a gold watch and chain from the members of the congregation. Mr Greenhill, chairman of the committee, in making tho presentation, referred to Miss Pcttigrcw's untiring zeal in all work connected with the church. During the five' years since the church was opened she had spared neither time nor energy in keeping the church in order, and also attending to her Sunday School class. Miss McHardy, who returned thanks on behalf of Miss Pcttigrew, said that the work had been done without any thought of earthly reward.
Says oui- Eltham contemporary of yesterday's date:—"Mr James Me..' Leod, accompanied by Mrs McLcod, left Eltham per mail train last night en route, for New Plymouth, where Mr McLcod takes up an important position on tlic Duly News. During the two and a half years that Mr McLcod has been in Eltham he has made hosts of friends in this town. Ho has ever been obliging and helpful to all he came in contact with, his ability as a "newspaperman" has been generally recognised and his departure is universally regretted. We wish him every possible success in his new sphere, and we know full well that New Plymouth iB gaining the services of a capable and reliable journalist who will do good work for the town." -
