A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS.
Dunbmn, January 2. A lad of 18 yoars of ago, named tAlfred Lewis, was the victim of a fatal accidont at Deborah Bay on December 31, It appears that deceased and another young man were gatheringsome of the " Taipo" explosive which [ had been left on the beach when the company gave up the manufaoturo of I tho material, Decoascd was putting! the explosives in a bag, whilst Nelson had a lighted match. By some means the bag caught lire, and the explosive severely burned Lewis, who died at 6 a.m. yesterday. At the inquest this morning, the jury returned a verdict that death was due to shock caused by severe burns from the "Taipo" explosive. They added a rider: " That gross carelessness had been exercised in disposing of the explosives, and that the authorities should take action to discover by whose authority it was placed within the reach of all and sundry; also that immediato steps be taken to destroy the remainder." Eltham,, January 2. A man named W. Irwin was fatally injured this morning, The axle of a butter-carrying waggon broke, the load falling on him; He was conveyed to town, aud died, .shortly after admission to the hospital, from internal injuries. Pahiatua, January 2. At Kn'itawa, Ernest Stratford, aged 27, was thrown from a horse, sustaining injuries from which he died.
