Taranaki Education Board.

Tho monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Hoard was held cn Wednesday. Mr .hunts Wade (chairman) piiesided, ami there were also present : Mrs Dougherty, Messrs Morton, Faull, Mackay, Monkh-ouse, McDonald, Maunder and Adlam.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. J lie Chairman presented a report on his visit, in company with the Inspector, to the Wellington Conference. In addition to attending the conlerence they had waited upon the officers of tile Department with regard to several Hoard matters, and wished to acknowledge 'the courteous treatment received. In regard to the. pupil teachers' regulations,: the .points of difference Here not of vital import-

With rel'erI ence to Mangarea school, the itispec-tor-(ieneral had agreed to recommend the proposed increase in the cost of construction. -As, to the l.'ruti residence asked for the Department required Information' as to where the teacher was residing. The Department had refused the Wailii residence application . The chairman recommended that tho request for the. house a llowance lie received. The Whaiijramoiiiima residence application had also ibwn refused, but the chairman recommended that the application for the house allowance be renewed and the chse put as strongly as possible. Respecting the Board's request concerning maintenance, tha Department notified that £BOO had been remitted. The grant requested for Makahu had been granted. The question of u residence at! Mahoe was held over, pending the appointment. of a teacher. The District Roads Engineer was mating inquiries about giving children on tlve York Road access .to 'the Denbigh ltoad School, as the Education Board could not make the grant. The Secretary for Education (Sir E. 0. Gibbes) , will be in New Plymouth within a few days, and will discuss matters with the Board. The report was ahopted. The matter of 'l-hij Maitgnroa School was left to the Chairman. The Chairman and Inspector were thanked for their services, and a total sum, £2O was passed for travelling expenses. LATRINES AT WEST END, The Chairman reported having been informed by the Department that septic tanks cannot be provided for the scht|o>ls, HutM'felJ'ia of the offices might bo made. The Inspector-General! had also stated that when aduitional accommodation is necessary, -thu cost of offices should bo included, but on tho form there is no provision for such an application. Since the above the application had . l;,:>en refused, but tha Chairman re- - commended that the request be ro- > nowed.

This course was agreed to. ARCHITECTS UEVOTIT. Tha Architect (Mr Jas. Sanderson) reported on work .done and in hand. Ho reported on ihe teacher's residence at Stratford, ami prepared a plan -showing the proposed additions, \vit'J\ estimated cost. The building required painting. Mr Pikctt was getting on rapidly with the additions to the .Waitara school, ami hoped lo complete in three weeks. Mr Hall, would complete the additions to the Salisbury Koad school in about a, fortnight. Repairs at 1 Cardiff had been placed ,in tho -hands of Mr Crossley. Work-authorised at X'g'airc would be attended to soon. The contractor for the Mft'tioi'e school would complete the contract in about a fortnight. Keport adopted. STIiATFOHI) SCHOOL. Ihe SlratloPtil "School Committee wrotu asking- why tenders 'had not been called for re-building the west wing of the school. Tire Chairman said the fault did not lie wilh the Hoard, and said the following telegram had that morning beenj received from the Inspector(icneral ; ''Sum of £3BO authorised for re-building and additions at Stratford School. Letter follows." A resolution was passed informing the committee of tlvd circumstances tf the matter. The architect was 'instructed to call for fthe work of rc-in statement. The Stratford Commit too also asked t hat'tho nra'tter of increasing the amount of the capitation grant to the committee 'be considered. The Hoard decided that a special grant of £ls -be authorised for the year ending March ai, 1900, in lieu of having to pay for the water supply.

HALF TIME SCHOOLS. Letters were received from the I Whitianga and Kohuratahi settlers, objecting to hall-Ume schools, asking for a full time school at each plae!. Mr Monk-house said that the only alternative to the establishment of halt-time schools there was to arrange for the carriage of the children to one school. After 'discussion, the matter was re. ferred to Mr Monkhouse for report.
