TARANAKI Vi WELUNOTOX* (Per Frees Associativa.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 16, Very littlo interest was taken in the football match between Wellington and Taranaki, played this afternoon in the presence ot about 1500 spectators. The home team ha<l all tiro best o! tho struggle throughout, an<l won by six points to nil. From the spectators' point of view it was a very poor game neither team doing itself justice. Taranaki played with the wind in the first spell, which ended without any score, ffhe Wellington forwards showed great superiority in the opeiv ami the Taranaki backs, by erratic passing, threw away three or four reasonable chances, of scoring. As soon as ends changed Wellington got on a magnificent passing rush, which Ryan started in Taranaki's 25's, the ball being passed cleanlj between three or' four ot tho Wei lington men, and oveivtually found its way into Dodtl's hands near tho line, and he scored, but no goal resulted. The second try was the result of a great run l>y Dawson, who secured the ball nonr tho centre, and, evading all the Taranaki back division, scored near the corner flag. The kick at 'goal was "a failure. After this the visitors attacked strongly, but their backs were not in a scoring vein, and Wellington's forwards had littlo •difficulty in clearing their line. Rugi. by Unions was played at Westport to-day, and resulted in a draw—a penalty g(oal for Buller kicked by McNally, and a try secured for Westland by Gillighan. Though the ground was in a very W,ad state owing to the recent heavy rains, and a shower falling during play, tha game was of a very fast order. In the first spell Buller scored a penalty goal, and again l and again the forwards swept the length of the field only to over-run the ball. The Westland forwards were the heavier, but the Buller men were cleverer in their footwork, and were well supported by their backs..
