Niederer, a sawmSller, was fined *a and costs for casually employing men as shoomen at labourers' wages while tho mill was being got ready for work. • '
W. J. Pony, sawniiller, was fined £lO for paying a slabman less tham the award rate, ignorance being pleaded. Perry was also charged with employing a youth at Work for which he would have had to pay a man the award wage. The Court pointed out that clause 4, containing tho schedule of wages, also stated that a boy of 16 years could.be oraployed at 3s Od per day provided his wages were raised Is per day each year. It was open for an employer to work a lad in any branch. A boy must be held to have becom* a man when he has reached his majority. A' porsoii over 21 years might still be Incapablo of doing a man's work, and provision was mad* to meot such cases. The charge was therefore dismissed.
J. W. Watson, tailor, was fined £lO and costs for paying a machinist 5s per week, and latterly 7s Gd« Tho girl said she was apprenticed to Watson, but had nover tieen given an apprentice's work. She did all his machining.. The Court pointed out that the lowest rate should bo 255, this Including machinists.,
