On June 23 last the Chairman 01 the Manchester Ship Canal Company, Mr John H. Bythell, cabled to the Premier :—"Pleased to inform you (hat Federal steamer Somerset lias just discharged at Manchester the first consignment of New 'Zealand pro-' dnce, Importtrs of meat, wool and other produce request your assistance Ito secure direct West Coast service,, including Manchester."
In a letter to the Premier by the last English mail, the Chairman dl the Company says : "Part of.the cargo of the steamer In question, the Somerset, consisted of 5000 lambs fram New Zealand, and 1 feel sure that you will be glad to hear that such a beginning has been made in this district, which hitherto lias been mainly supplied with frozen n.eat by the Argentine Republic. "I need scarcely repeat what you havo frequently heard before, that in and around Manchester ther© is an immense population ol well-pai<t wurk-people, who consume very large quantities of the produce which. New Zealand is desirous ot shipping. r,", 1 a . ra^ glad deport that.-the federal Steam Navigation Company Ltd., have now arranged that their homeward steamers from New Zealand shall include Manchester at a port of call, The time, occupied on pftbsag* by, the present West Coast service ol steamers is, however a cause of dissatisfaction to importers who are aniious for a direct service to Manchester and West Coast porta withqut calling at Australia or South African ports.
