THE CAUSE OF ALL THE TROUBLE. LORD SELBOURNE'S ADVICE
(Received July 1, 10.315 p.m.) CAPETOWN, July 4. Replying to a deputation of' Rand miners asking for protection against Chinese labour, Lord Sclbourne, High Commissioner-, replied that the bad language the Chinese used against the whites appeared to lie (he sole cause of air the trouble. Although 40,000 Chinese were employed there were only twenty cases of assault in the year, fourteen occurring in two mines, and si); between the other twenty-six mines. He urged the whites to refrain from drink and bad language, thus setting a good example to the Chinese..
