ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the licensing Committee for the Taranaki district was hold at New Plymouth 'Courthouse on Thursday morning.) ■ Mir T. Hutchison, S.M. presided, tundi there were also on the Bench : Messrs W. L. Newman, I). Berry, W. Ambury, J. S. McKellar, and T. Brash.: Serjeant HaKidreU appeared on JutehaH of tho police. —Publicans' Licenses.— Tho following renewals pf Rublfo cans' licenses were granted without opposition :—D. O'Brien, Criterion! Hotel (Mr Quillium for the applicant) r Charles Clarke, White Hart Hotel (Mr Quilliam) ; Catherine Mc~ Isa a c, Terminus Hotel (Mr Quilliam.) ; Edwin Whittle, Red House Hotel (Mr Quilliam) ; I)cnis Maroney Itahotu Hotel (Mr W. 1). Anderson) ; ( 'lTvonuas Krpwles, BrciaikwMer -Hotel (Mr C. H. Weston). In granting the renewM'of the license for the Taranaki Hotel to Henry J. Julian, the Chairman said that a special report had |been furnished to! the committee on the conduct of tha hotel, special mention being made of a robhery committed, thore recently. He (Mr Hutchison) had been directed by the committee to caution! the licensee Sto too more careful in conducing Lho hotel in future, so as ito prevent bad characters from congregating -there or remaining on the premises.
Mr Quillinm, who appeared Tor the liconsee, pointed out thaf the proprietor could not 1)0 expected to known the character of every man that went to tho place. An hotel was a public place, and it was limpossfijlc for Mr Julian to investigate the character of everybody who went there. The S.M. reiterated the need for strict supervision, remarking that the well conducted hotels hud not these robberies against thism. —Acconnii£xlkvuipn House ijicenpps.— ' Renewals? were grantedr as follows : —Henry John Little, Okato Hotel (Mr And#son for the applicant) : Walter Staite, Onkura Hotel (Mr C. H. Weston). —Transfers and Renewals.— The transfer of the Commonwealth HioJtel from Jeremiah O'Driscoll to> Joseph Cody was confirmed ; and the license renewed (Mr T. S. Weston for the applicant). James Smith, licensee of the Imperial (hotel, who held a transfer j was granted a new license for the same premises: Mr Quillimii appeared for tho applicant. An application for the transfer of the Kahotu Hotel from Denis Moloney to Alexander Hood was withdrawn by Mr Anderson In >view of the renewal to the former, —Wholesale Licenses.— Renewals wero granted to L. D. Nathan and Co., Ltd;, William Humphries, and Abraham floldwater. Mr Quilliam appeared for the applicants. —l'ackel License.— A renewal was given to the Northern Steamship Company for the s.s. Rurawa.
