Closing Hours for Hotels.
APPLICATION FOK EXTENSION REFUSED. Mr T. S. Weston, on behalf of Mr Joseph Cody, licensee of the Commonwealth Hotel, applied to the Taranaki licensing Committee on Thursday for an extension from ttO to 11 p.m. us the closing hour for the hotel. Counsel said that as he supposed the Licensing Committed would not entertain an application for one hotel only, he would apply for the extension to apply to all the hotels in the New Plymouth borough. He contended that 10 o'clock was too early an hour at which to close, inconveniencing the travelling public as well as those who had occasion to be out niter 10 p.m., such as people attending theatrical performances and public meetings, etc. The Chairman (Mr Hutchison) : The Bench will require evidence as to requirements;. We have simply to decide on a question of fact. Mr Weston said that he had not proposed to call evidence, hut would put Mr Cody in the box. The S.M. : Are you really serious in this application, Mr Weston ? It is not a joke as uiy colleagues are inclined to regard it'.' Mr Weston said the application was made in good faith. He would not joke upon such an important question. The S.M. : What attitude are the police taking on this application ? Sergeant Haddrell said that he had had no notice of the application, but he would certainly oppose it. Mr F. !•:. Wilson intimated that he opposed the application on behalf of certain electors. The S.M. : Did you get notice, Mr Wilson ? Mr Wilson : No, your Worship, I appeared "on spec." (Laughter.) Joseph Cody, the licensee, then gave evidence. Ills experience here and at Wanganui convinced him that 11 o'clock would be a more satisfactory hour for closing. He gave instances of the inconvenience of the present hour to travellers and others. Ho had never consulted any other licensee on the matter. Travellers could under the existing hours get accommodation after 10 p.m Mr Quilliam intimated that he appeared foi' the other hotelkeepers, and made no such application. The Committee were unanimous in refusing the extension.
