Railway Social.

It was a happy idea of the Railway Social Club to engage the Theajtre Hoyal for their annual social; 'gathering on Thursday evening, and i 'the function proved an unqualified success, and far in advance of anyhmg previously held in connection; willi the railway service. The gathering numbered about 200, and the xlmirabtc arrangements made en- j sured a most enjoyable evening for | li present. The theatre was nicely • KlecomtyHl with fla|gw,l streamers,, j palms, ferns, nikaus in pots, and floral' designs. A semaphore signal, and largo brilliant railway lumps. i arranged on the stage admirably set off the signiiicance of the gathering. | The opening ceremony took plate at 8 o'clock, when Mr L. Pepperelt (President of the Hallway Soc,ial Club) introduced Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.K, The latter made a few brief remarks appropriate to the occasion and took the opportunity of apologising for the absence of Sir Joseph Ward. At a later stage the Mayor (Mr R.. Cock) arrived and also addressed the assemblage. He considered such a gathering much moro enjoyable from every point o( view than the smoke socials previously held for the sole Innelit of the men. I A delightful dance programme was carried out. The floor was in good condition, and first-class music was supplied by the Colonial Piano Company's orchestra—Messrs A. James (piano), J, Davidson (cornet), and IJ. Schdroski (violin). Mr S. lienni'tt was an efficient M.C., assisted by Messrs W, Way and A. Small, i A musical and varied programme,, arranged by Mr W. Shaw, interspersed the dancos, the performers being] Messrs Shaw and Cooper, songs ; A. Nash and L. Smith, coon song and I dance ; W. Lints', live-club swinging ; Spear, hornpipe ; and W. J. Thompson, phonograph selections.

| For non-dancers tables were arranged on the stage, at which bridge and "Pit" provided amusement. | The excellent supper, which was provided jointly by the caterer, Mr A. Lealand, and the ladies' committee, was dainty o nd appetising'. I Credit for Ihf; arrangements is due to the secretary (Mr S. Smith) and the chairman (Mr Pepperill), and to Messrs Moulding, Pepperill, Drown. Seabright, Alger, Simmons, Hoskiiv, | and Hnddrcll for the decorations,' and to the ladies' committee, Mesiiames R. Cock, E. M. Smith, Pepperill, O'l.oughlin, Simmons, Thompson, Moulding, lloskin, Duffin, and' Maude. '
