Political Labour League.
A meeting of the local branch of the Independent Political Labour League was held at the Whiteley Hall on Thursday evening. In view of the inclement weather there was only a moderate attendance, Mr Christ ison (President) taking Clie chair.
The Minister of Justice acknowledged the receipt of the comimnwcation from the League, requesting the enforcement of the Weights and Measures Act at New Plymouth. Ho stated that the matter would receive consideration and attention. In a communication oji various matters, Mr J. Itigg, M.L.C., stated that the recent conference of the league held at Wellington wasj a great success. Tliero were 14 branches of the league now established in the colony, with over 1000 members, and the movement was making excellent progress.
Mr Stevenson, who attended the conference as the New Plymouth delegate, gave a detailed roport of the proceedings. He thought the result of the amendments to tho fighting platform would be considered satisfactory, and materially strengthen the league for future work. A number of practical amendments had been matlo. The plank "periodical re-valuatiion of all Crown lands held on lease" had been amended to read
"existing lenses to be exempt until the death of the present tenant or the transfer of tho lease to another party." Mr Stevenson was accorded a hearty voto of thanks for the manner in which he had represented the branch at the conference.
It was decided to call a special meeting lor 7 o'clock on Saturday evening to discuss what action shnll be taken in connection with the coming election.
