THE LAND COMMISSION.
(Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, March G. The Land Commission sat at Gore to-day, when it was found that several witnesses declared in favour of the freehold and three for the leasehold, one'of the latter on the ground that tand he knew in the district had doubled in value in l 17 years. The Government valuer said tha<t allowing loans to three-fifths value ok" inifprovcmenls would be dangerous, as some leaseholders had peculiar ideas of- what" constituted improvements. Another witness complained that he Gould not divide a Crown leasehold among his children, as he thought right. Yet another said that payment of rent to the Government for Kfe meant tha.t they were giving" money to the Government to send Home to the money lenders. A merchant witness said that the cause of tihe abnormal growth of weeds in the district was the purchase of rubbish from seedrcleamng machines at a shilling per bag.
