Borough Works Committee.
The Works Committee of the Borough Council met on Thursday evening. Present : His Worship the Muyor (Mr K. Cock), Crs. Cliff, Wilson, Collis, Hrowuo, Ahier. —Finance.— Messrs (fovelt mid Quilliam wrote, advising the council as to the terms of the (kv.l of hypothecation in connection with the lonn account. The Mayor intimated that it was desirable to invest £2OO of the trust funds arising from the sale of land at Toko for railway purposes, and now on deposit in the purchase of debentures, thus securing 5$ per cent, instead of two.—The proposal was adopted, and the deed approved subject to the deduction of the £.200. The Mayor and Or. Collis were authorised to sign the deed. J Molesworth Street Extension.— [A letter was read from Mr W. L. , Newman stating the terms on which ;iie offered his Urougham Street pro- | petty to the boivu.-.h. || u stipulatI ed for an answer by a specified date. j The price named was £3o'per foot for 55 feet, and was also willing to take £3OOO in debentures, and £350 ' I in cash. j The Mayor stated that he had in- 1 I terviewed 'Sir .Joseph Ward on thai subject, and the Minister had promised to send up a. special ollicer to report on the matter. The question ! of diverting the line from running : through the town was considered by | the Department as too costly. He ! j further stated that the (Government.'a i decision on the proposed extension i of Molesworth Street would nmteri-1 ally affect that of acquiring Mr i Newman's property. There was also ; tiic question of making terms with j the Harbour ' Hoard, so that altogether the matter was somewhat j tangled. I Cr. Cliff moved that Mr Newman ' be requested to hold his oiler open for another month, and that tho' borough pay him four per cent, on the price named. I It was pointed out that this course was illegal. Eventually considern. tion of the letter was deferred till Monday next. | On the motion of Cr. Clirt, the enj gineer was instructed to prepare plans showing the proposed extenjsion. —Water for Fitzroy School.— j The Fitzroy School Committee , wrote inquiring whether {he council j would supply i water.; to the school, i and on what terms. ' I The Town Clerk was instructed to prepare for the council meeting on | Monday a statement showing tho I present charge for water to the town schools, and the attendance. j —Tampering With Lamps.— i The Gas Company wrote complain- J l ing of lamps in the borough being re- : lit by boys after being extinguished. A culprit having been caught in the | act, the company asked the council Ito prosecute.
It was resolved that the company jbe informed that there is no byelaw dealing with the olTcnce in question, but pointing out that the company could, by virtue of the power in their Act, institute proceedings. —Drainage Connections.— The Hospital- Board wrote asking that their new building to be used for 0 nurses' home be connected with the borough sewer. Cr. Collis pointed out that deviations were being sanctioned, the consequence being that some of the original scheme would have to be droi>ped for want of money. I The Mayor : That is the fault of the council which framed the loan proposals and did not ask for sufficient money. He moved that the engineer at once proceed with the ■sewer up Mount Edgecombe Street. I An application by Dr. McCleland to connect his house with the borough sewer was' referred to the engineer to report upon. I —Bridge at Carrington Iload.— I The Carrington Itoad Board wrote offering- to contribute £2O towards the cost of a bridge over the Huatoki, on the Carrington Hoad, on' condition that the council provida the ironbark timber. The board is to be asked to supply the engineer with plans to enuble him, to report thereon. —Consolidation of Acts.— In reply to a communication from the Government, the Town Clerk was instructed to convey the council's approval of the Government's action in consolidating the various local Acts of Parliament. —Water Mains.—

To be acknowledged with thanks. i —Dangerous Trees.— d, Tho engineer was instructed to rear port on dangerous trees on Stan's dish's hill. y I —Tenders for Metal.— ts Four tenders were received for Hup,n. plying 18G5 yards of metal for Eliot, y St. Aubyn, Courtenay, Powderham, and Cameron Streets. n _ ' The engineer was instructed to rete port on the tenders on Monday* er I —Claim for Damages.— c Messrs Malone, McVeagh, and Anderson wrote on behalf of Mr T. 'j'lWoodard, claiming £2O for damages to his property caused by tho cnir " | bankment at the approach to the 1 Henui bridge. ! i It was decided to reply declining *; to recognise any liability. „. —Proposed Improvement.— g Mr Maisey wrote on behalf of Mr i"- Collctt asking for permission to diit vert the Huatokf stream between Viil vian and Courtenay Streets on a J- give and take principal. After reading the engineer's report, which was favourable, it was decided to view the spot on Monday. —Engineer's Report.— , y. The engineer, Mr Gibbon, reported y that the contractors for the septic I J. tank had made a good start. The '. Brougham Street sewer had been e started, and when finished tho St. s Aubyn Street sewer would be taken ' i- in hand. He submitted plans for ,- the Queen Street culvert, the length ._ of which was o3 feet. The contrac- ' ,'. tor for supplying boulders to the crusher had commenced delivery. The ' e crusher had been raised three feet, and ' s the shoots remodelled. Contrary to , the resolution of the council, a high e dive platform had been erected at ', e the baths without first submitting j _ the plans for his approval. He had I found it necessary to dismiss the lj .foreman, and had temporarily ap- I pointed T. McCarthy as the best man available. Plans for the re-', i (pair of the Currie Lane bridge had < ' been prepared, but he deferred mnk- j ing an estimate till after preparing i ( the plans for the pipe bridge. All \ the stones had been takon out of , the beds of the Huatoki and Mango- { " tuku streams, the old wreck removed, i £ and the beds cleaned, a very great n improvement being effected thereb'y. " The storm water from the Avenue c ' Road had been diverted across the e s road into the water courso running , past the High School grounds. r Cr. Cliff moved that tenders be rj called for the Uueen Street culvert. Curried. Cr. Brown nskod that an amount of £3O duo to the .Western Park Committee be passed. The Mayor intimated that the. question was not one for the works A committee to deal with. Cr.
