AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 23. In an address at the annual meetling of the Auckland Chtinracc of Commerce, tho retiring president, Mr John Held, read a number of reports compiled by local firms as to the progress of the various trades in Auckland during the past year. The report on tho kauri gum industry stated that tho production of gum for 1901. totalled 10,080 tons, as against 8887 tons for 1903. The market during the greater part of the .year was most unsatisfactory, and shippers hml all suffered considerable loss through the great decline in prices. Recent advices from America were more encouraging. Tho report on the dairy industry staled that the value of tiro butter j exported from Auckland in 1901 was' £229,307, as against £184,336 in 1 1903. For ten months of the present season there was an increase of ,20 per cent., as compared with the .corresponding period of last year. | The report on (he. wool market slated that the host indication of improved prices could be gathered from the average prices per bale during the past three years. There was now a sign of a slight decline. It was believed that prices would re> main at a payable point for some years to come.
