Taranaki Regatta.
This annual ovont was hold yesterday at Waitara, under exceedingly favourable circumstances. 'l'hi- weather was all that could be desired, u beautiful cool breeze blowing from the sea adding- greatly to the enjoyment of the'day's outing. The races were very evenly contested, and some very good finishes resulted. The committee one and till worked with a will, ami the events, excepting the last few, were got oil' well to time, The Waituru Jinnd wus in attendance, and rendered a iirst-cluss programme'; The secretary (Mr Spur-; die) is entitled to a word of praise' for the excellent arrangements in connection with the regatta, everything going oil without a hitch. The takings amounted to £B<i 112s, being within about £1 of the amount taken lust year, which must be verj gratifying to the conimillpe. Appended are the results ol U;e various events : Maiden Whaleboat ltacc, one mile afui a half.—Clifton I, Mokau 2, fW'uitara il. The three boats got uwuy nicely together, Clifton at once going to the front, and winning by about seven lengths. Time, lJmin. Hoys Clinker Fours, one mile.— Tikorangi were the only starters, and rowed over the course. Senior Clinker Fours, one miile.— I'nion 1, Clifton 2. From u good start Union went to the front, and pulling a splendid stroke won by three lengths. Time, 4min 33ser,. Girls' Whaleboat Race.—Waitara 1, Clifton 2. The Wuitara girls were too good for Clifton, and won by two lengths. No time taken. Championship Whaleboat Itace, three miles.—Tikorungi 1, Clifton 2, Mokau 3. The boats got away evenly together, Clifton going to the front, which position they held to the outer buoy, being closely followed by Tikorungi, Waitara, and Mokau. On the run back to the inner buoy Clifton gave place to Mokau, Tikorangi and Wuitara being close up. On returning to the lirst buoy Clifton hnd again assumed the command, Tikorangi and Mokau rounding almost at the sumo time. Wuitara crew had evidently had enough, and gave up. The run homo was very exciting, very little separating any of the boats, and amidst great excitement Tikorangi crossed the line first, about a length and a half separating the three boats. Time, 21min Msec. Maiden Clinker Fours, about one mile. —Aramoho 1, Union 2, Wunganui 3. Union got rather the best of the start, but Aramoho went to the front, and finished aSAut a length and a hulf in from on Union. Time, 4min 46sec. Youths' Whnlahont naee, about one mile and a half.—Clifton 1.. Tikorangi also started, but gave up. Senior Clinker Fours, about one mile.—Clifton rowed over the course, being the only entry. Ladies' Whaleboat) Kucc, about half a mile.—Wuitara No. 1 team 1, Waitara No. 3, 2 ; Waitnra No. 2, j3. The winners rowed in good style, winning by about a length. Flying Whaleboat Jlace, about 'three-quarters of a mile.—Mokau 1, Tikorangi 2, Waitara 3. This wus 'a splendid race. Mokau hnd a slight ] advantage soon after the start, and 'rowing splendidly increased their lead, winning by about a length, inches only separating the second and third boats. Time, oinin 32 I sec. | Veterans' Whaleboat Huce, about one mile and a half.—Tikorangi 1, Waitara 2. The only competitors. , Tikorangi pulled a nice stroke from start to finish. Won by a length and a half. No time token. '. Junior Clinker Fours, about one mile.—Aramoho 1, Union 2, Wanganui 8. This was a fine race, Aramoho finishing with a nice spurt. I Won by a length, about throe lengths separating the., second and third. I Time, Qinin 6sec. Pair Oar Whaleboat Race, nbout I one mile.—Tikorangi 1, Waitara 2 Clifton 3. A great race from start to finish, Tikorangi gaining the verdict by a few inches, Clifton beinj very close up. No time taken. | Maori Canoe Hace.—Mokau wen the only competitors for this race and rowed over the course. | Handicap Swimming Kace.—Drak 3sec, 1: L. Clarke lOsec, 2. Nc time taken. I Mounted Swimming '|lliice.—Ansel 1, O'Sullivan 2. Won by üboul three yards. (ireasv ilooni.—Dugdule and L Clare, tie. This event caused a 10l of amusement.
