in Indiscreet Harbourmaster. '(ltcccivcd Jan. 26, JO.oG p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 26. The Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Captain Bird as harbourmaster found that the appointment was made on the merits. Thcro was no evidence that he had paid or promised to pay any sum in consideration of receiving the position. The commission olSo found that Captain Hird had shown utter want of prudence, almost amounting to recklessness, since his appointment. Mr John Norton, of Sydney Trutli, recently made serious allegations as to the manner in which Captain Bird had secured his appointment as harbourmaster at Sydney, and the commission was set up" to inquire into these charges.
